Job Summary

Cleveland State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance invites applications for a full-time, visiting guest artist in Dance. Responsibilities include teaching introductory through advanced contemporary modern technique; Directorship of the CSU Dance Company which involves choreographing, rehearsing, and production of performances including annual mainstage and associated outreach activities; and performing and creating new work. The ability to contribute through scholarship/creative work, teaching, and service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community is expected of all faculty.
Dance at Cleveland State University is designed around the mission to make dance accessible to all students and the surrounding community, from novice to professional. The CSU Arts Campus is located in the nationally recognized Cleveland Playhouse Square district, which includes beautiful state of the art dance studios and access to the Allen Theater Complex. Our B.A. in dance includes a comprehensive curriculum of coursework in technique, composition, repertory, dance history, and pedagogy with choice of two tracks: Creative Process and Performance or Dance in Community. Students perform and choreograph in the CSU Dance Company, as well as learn works by nationally and regionally renowned dance artists. Centered in an active dance community, there are many opportunities for engaged learning experiences and to network within the professional community via master classes and workshops including programming with GroundWorks DanceTheater, our professional dance company in residence and community partner DANCECleveland. Additionally, the historic CSU Summer Dance Workshop, for three decades has brought renowned dance artists representing diverse forms to campus for intensive study, performances and seminars.

Minimum Qualifications

MFA in dance or equivalent and evidence of high quality professional creative work (choreography and performance).

Preferred Qualifications

Prior university teaching experience. The ability to teach several of the following is desirable: hip hop/vernacular dance forms, improvisation and composition, ballet and community based dance. The ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community. In addition, the ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic proponent of a multi-focused approach to teaching and learning that cultivates internal partnerships across university disciplines and external collaborations with groups in the community to further promote the integration of dance into today’s society.

This is a temporary, full-time position. Hiring is contingent on maintaining existing levels of funding from the state of Ohio.
